I think it says (London) National British subject? it's from an 1891 census. If correct, does anyone know why it would say this?

It's confusing me and I can't seem to get any further back than his father's name (John Slater) that I got from a marriage certificate and certainly can't find any more information on him (Richard Slater)

I think it would be Naturalised British Subject. Maybe his parents were of some other nationality.

Thanks for the information. I have a death of 24th November 1892 aged 49 in Sheffield general cemetery. I have ordered a death certificate from gro to see if that gives me any additional information, although it probably won't.

I guess the only way I would know if they are the correct births is to order a birth certificate and see if the father's name is John?

I have to admit I am not so good at this.

Let us know the details on the death certificate when you get it.

Finding a baptism would be a good way forward, if Richard's father was from abroad it may have been in the church of his nationality. John is a name that can have been anglicised from many originals; Slater could be an anglicisation as well.

I believe the death is consumption which seems to be Tuberculosis when I searched.

Yes, consumption was used when referring to TB.
