Haslingden workhouse but not poor
« on: Sunday 27 December 20 13:44 GMT (UK) »
Is there a reason why you would go into the workhouse if you weren’t destitute?

My great great grandmother Eliza Ann Daniels was from Halifax then went to Accrington with her grown up children  (shes on the 1911 census with her son and his family) Her probate entry in 1921 shows address as Haslingden union workhouse, and died at Moorlands House Haslingden. Probate of £500 went to her sister so she wasn’t exactly poor.  Burial is confusing as she has turned up in a churchyard in Salterhebble, Yorkshire and address is Moorland house Halifax. She has no known connections to Salterhebble, her husband is buried in the main area of Halifax.

Was there a Moorland/s House in Haslingden, and are Haslingden workhouse records available to view?

I’m wondering if she fell out with her family. Why go to the workhouse if your children had good jobs and you had some money yourself then left it all to your sister

Thanks!

She may have died in the infirmary wing. Workhouses provided the only free hospitals in some areas, before the National Health Service began.
If there are records they will probably be in Lancashire Archives. Admission registers of a few workhouses have been transcribed and added to Lancashire Online Parish Clerks website but Haslingden isn't one of them.

I noticed that a source is a B.A.  thesis by Rhodes Boyson. He became a headteacher, councillor and M.P.

Her husband died in 1903 leaving her over £4000, would she have been entitled to free care? She didn’t die in the workhouse though, but in this Moorlands House which I’m having trouble finding as the burial says it’s in Halifax, probate  says haslingden.

Thanks for the workhouse link will take a look

I was just about to say that, a really interesting read

Glad the children didn’t send her there! Now to puzzle over why she was buried in Salterhebble!

Excuse me for this - but Salterhebble is in Halifax - Genuki = "Salterhebble in the township of Skircoat in the parish of Halifax, 1 3/4 miles SW of Halifax"
