Baptisms for the Salliss family - Eastington, 1794
« on: Sunday 27 December 20 22:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Trying to find a baptism and missing siblings for this family. Sometimes transcribed as: Sollis and Sollice. Sorry - long post.

I've worked my way up to a Jacob Salliss. Born around 1793 and died 1853. Married Mary Bennett in 1819 in Kingscote, Gloucestershire. I think they have ten children together in Kingscote and Charlton Kings:

Harriet - 1819
Joseph Hayward - 1821
John - 1824
Anne Mary - 1827
Jabez - 1829
Stephen - 1834
Isaac Hayward - 1836
Elijah - 1838
Jane Pamela - 1839
Thomas - 1843

I have found Jacob and Mary on the 1841 and 51 census but they are living apart and split the kids between them. 1851 census lists Jacob's birth as 1794, Eastington and I believe I found his burial in Charlton kings in 1753 which lists his birth as 1793.

But I have found no baptism for him.

However, I do think I found two of his siblings:

Joseph Hayward Salliss - around 1783
John Salliss - around 1794

John - I believe is living with Jacob in 1841 while his wife Edith Pitt and their child are living with Jacob's wife and family. He married her in 1826, Charlton Kings. He's a widower but I can't find his first marriage. But it was in the presence of a Joseph Hayward Salliss.

Joseph Hayward - I think I found him on 1841 census living a few doors down from Mary and Edith and the 1851 census living with his wife Jane with his birth written as Eastington as well. And I believe I have is death in 1853.

But again, no baptisms for either of them. And with the 1783 to 1794 gap, I believe I'm missing some siblings between the two. Just can't find them.

Now - I have found a marriage in Preston near Cirencester in 1780 to an Isaac Salliss and Jane Hayward. Which I think based on the Jane's surname could be their parents. The name Hayward gets carried down a couple generations to an Isaac Joseph Hayward Salliss. But I can't link them. I even think I have a Isaac's baptism in 1747 Minchinhampton to a Jacob and Sarah.

If anyone can help me find their baptisms or any more siblings, just any connections that would be great. Adding census codes was making it really messy. Just ask if you would like me to add them.

Thanks for reading.

As the moment, I can't see this Licence on the Forest of Dean Marriage Licence and Bonds.  The Gloucestershire Marriage Allegations 1747-1837 and Marriage Bonds 1730-1823 on the website - do have a number of SOLLACE/SOLLIS/SOLLACE/SALIS/ etc around the area, i.e. Cirencester, Charleton Kings, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham  including a Martha SOLLIS, 1777, Cheltenham.

Thanks everyone, looks like a lot of criminal behaviour going on. I'm not seeing any deaths for Isaac. The 1833 one for Jane Salliss is in Charlton Kings which is encouraging.

There is a bunch of Land Tax Records for an Isaac Sallis in Ampney, St Peter, Gloucestershire. I didn't think much of it but looking online: 'Locally the town was known as Easington.' Which is what the census lists as Jacob's birth place. When I looked that up originally it added a 't' for Eastington, Stroud but maybe it really did mean Easington.

Question on land tax records, does it suggest someone was a farmer or they could just be anything?

This very local area is where by Ancestors lived - and all very small places.

It you Google.....

Men in Armour for Gloucestershire 1608

link....

www.coaley.net

You will find under one of the headings.....  Local History

Population tables for Gloucestershire from 1801 onwards every 10 years etc.

Search for

Easington is says.   see Ampney St Peter

and then

Ampney St Peter or Easington 533 acres etc. and in 1801 the population was 162 people - which doesn't amount to many households.

Ampney St Peters, would have earned its keep from two principal activities, sheep farming and limestone quarrying.  This information is on Tinstaafl Transcripts.

---

If you belong to Ancestry and look at the baptism Ampney St Peters etc book ....  at the back is written

Memorandum of an Account of the Population of this Parish taken May the 27 1811 when there appeared to be as under

Male - 94, Females 109 - total 203

Number of Inhabited Houses 40 - families 46

of this where were employed in Husbandry and Labourer - 24

In trade or handicraft - 17
Other families not include 5
Number of inhabited Houses 1
No House building

The Populaltion of this Parish in the year 1800 appears to have been 162 - there is consequently an increase in the last ten years of 41.
