William Bastard - Preston North Shields
« on: Monday 28 December 20 12:11 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

Could anyone please help as to what the occupation of William Bastard is on these census records. I'm trying to see if he had anything to do with the cemetery as his son Robert George Bastard is down as being born there and it states they also live there on various searches.

Many thanks. L

His death announcement in the Shields Daily News, 28th December 1898 states that he had been Sexton at Preston Cemetery for 42 years, so he must have worked there from the time it was first opened in 1857.

Yes - he is there in 1861, RG 9 / 3839 / 63 / 24

Thank you for all your reply, I have now found many articles on William and then his son Robert George Bastard who it seems took over from him as Ministers Clerk and attended as many as 31,000 interment!!

Hi Lisa,

I see that you have added a memorial from Robert george Bastard and that he died at Preston Hospital.
You may already know this but Tyne and Wear Archives have the hospital death records up to 1949.  These entries give the causes of death amongst other basic info.  Perhaps this might be of interest when the archives eventually reopen again.

I think Robert may well be buried with his family but this would have to be verified by a check to see if they have matching grave numbers.  North Shields local studies and Tyne and Wear Archives have the burial registers.
Hopefully, both will reopen again at some point in 2021.
By the way I wonder if Robert might have been born in the North Lodge building?
