Floodgate or Flood Gate (a place)
« on: Tuesday 29 December 20 13:09 GMT (UK) »
Any suggestions from a married woman in 1851 Yorkshire who gives her POB as Flood Gate, Shropshire? Not listed today as a town or village

Is she born in the county of Shropshire in the 1841 census?

Does she appear on the 1861 census?

Knowing her name and 1851 census reference details may help.

This looks like 1841 census from F M P, where it is stated that she is born in county:

Not so straightforward. Her family were mobile.
She was born Sarah NORBURY around 1780, but baptised in Cheshire at Church Lawton later that year. Married a man from Heckmondwike, Yorkshire in 1802 Liverpool, William POPPLEWELL, a woollen manufacture and lived in Batley. YKS.
Died 1854, so no further confirmation on POB.
Learned not to trust 1841. Says "yes".

There are several children baptised at Church Lawton to William and Sarah Norbury, perhaps she was mistaken in her belief that she was born in Shropshire?

Unless I've found the wrong marriage -

24 October 1802, by Licence - Christ Church, Liverpool

John Popplewell of the parish of Burstill, Yorkshire, Clothier and Sarah Norbury, spinster of Liverpool.

Added:  Family Search have Sarah from Burstill - BUT I was looking at the original parish register entry.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.
