James Nicholls Dead ?

I was working from this census so please tell me if this is wrong as I don't want to lead you astray.

1861 has a James in Newington with wife Eliza and is a cordwainer

Eliza 38 wife
Richard 18 son
Rebecca 15 daughter
Ellen 13 daughter
Maria 6 daughter
James 4 son
Joseph 4 son

This could be her birth registration

Then I was looking for Eliza in 1871 to check she was a widow and confirm James had died before 1871 and found this one

Eliza Nicholls age 47 widow born Southwark Surrey

She is described as a convict (prisoner) Millbank Prison

Entry 17, 18, 19, 20 & 21 all have Eliza and when you click on "Hulks and Prisons Quarterly Returns 1824-1879" you get a pop up that shows some of the info.

Larceny apparently.

Entry 22 has the Millbank prison info (that'll be an interesting one).

Entry 25 is Home Office Criminal Entry Books.

Eliza Nicholls 47 widow 4 children, read or write: imperfect, convicted 7 March 1870 at Newington of Larceny, 5 years, received 5 May 1870 from Newington. Removed 3 May 1871 to Woking prison.

On the calendar, she is bracketed with John Butterfield, otherwise Henry Body, otherwise William Simpkins who has a bit of record back to 1858.   
Both accused of "feloniously stealing one pair of boots, the property of William Lewis"  & "unlawfully attempting feloniously to steal one shirt, the property of Samuel Kilpin Catton, at St George the Martyr, Southwark". She is guilty on both accounts, he is guilty of attempting to steal, not guilty of larceny after a previous conviction of felony.

So I am assuming that the phrase "otherwise" means 'also known as'
 
So the 1871 should have her on it in Millbank as Milliepede said.

I'll look for a death post May 1871 for her including Woking area.

She may have done the whole 5 years or got out early.

OK so I have pinged off an email to the Bucks archives as they hold the records for in on Eliza.

So from a query on death of a man I have been blessed with an interesting criminal relation, possible living as a "wife" of him and a whole load of information.
