Hugh McLean
« on: Tuesday 29 December 20 18:45 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the above man who died in the UK whilst serving with the NZEF on 6 July 1917.  He is buried in Kilbrandon Churchyard and commemmorated on the war memorial in Kilbrandon.  According to his service papers he was born in Argyleshire on 12 August 1882 and his parents were Malcolm and Elizabeth McLean.  I have searched Scotlands People but cannot find a record of his birth so I wonder if Hugh was his first name.  Just looking for a male with the surname McLean produces a very long list so is there any way to shorten the list?  I am sure I have found the family on the 1881 census living at 6 Burnside Street, Oban but cannot find them on the 1891 census.

Just for background here, is this the family in 1881?

Malcolm McLean 42 mason b. Ardmaddy (?)
Elizabeth McLean 38 b. Mull
Hector McLean 17  engine cleaner b. Mull
Cathrine McLean 14 b. Oban
Elizabeth McLean 5 b. Oban
Ewen McLean 3 b. Oban

Address: 6 Burnside Street, Oban

Was Elizabeth's maiden name Black? Parents married on 20 Aug 1863 in Tobermory, Argyll?

There is a death reg showing on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for

Elizabeth Black/McLaine
Mother's maiden name McDonald
Age 38
523/ 121
Kilmore and Kilbride

Some family researchers have Elizabeth Black's death as being on 10 Nov 1881 in Oban, Kilmore & Kilbride.

Malcolm looks to have remarried a Christina McLean. The marriage shows in 1884 in Tobermory. He shows as still married to Christina on his death reg in 1917 in Kilbrandon.

This is the closest I can see for them in 1891:

Malcolm McLean 45 mason b. Argyll
Christina McLean 25 Railway Fireman Mason Wife b. Argyll
Hugh McLean 15 mason b. Argyll
John Buchanan 23 lodger
Duncan Buchanan 20 lodger

Address: Auch Bidge Hut 164, Glenorchy and Inishail, Argyll

A suggestion for your search on Hugh. Hugh and Ewen are first name variants, see www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=ewen

It may be that the date he used on his WW1 enlistment papers is not correct. Have you got other details for him? Certainly for his mother to have been Elizabeth Black, he would have been born before 1881.

When did he head off to New Zealand?

Hugh McLean is showing as aged 40 when he died in 1917, see www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2752683/HUGH McLEAN/ Both parents, Malcolm and Elizabeth show here as deceased. Malcolm had died just a couple of months earlier, on 12 March 1917. Image curtersy of family trees on this line below for Malcolm's death:

Thank you very much everyone for your prompt replies.  I should have looked at the photograph of his headstone which clearly states he was 40 when he died.  His actual date of birth is 23 January 1877 so I suspect he took 5 years off his dob when he enlisted in the army to make sure he would not be rejected because he was over age.  Once I established his correct dob everything else fell into place.

How did you come to the date, 23 January 1877?

I am going to counter that with a date of 23 May 1877..... ::)
