Genes Reunited

Hi all,

Has anyone got any experience of using this?

I joined and someone already has me on their tree. They also have my Parents and ancestors.
They have my wife's side of the family too.

What makes it a bit strange is that unless you are ME ... you could not have the connections to my Dad's side of the family unless you have Austrian ancestors ... and the wife's side has Scots and Irish .....

I have sent a message but not got a reply as yet.

People just expand their tree sideways.  They are not meant to put in living people without permission, but lots do not read the rules.  I am in 2 other trees, and my father is not in those 2 other trees but in 2 different ones, cannot remember if I have permission to see them - will go and have a look.

I've been a member for years, because that's where I first built my tree, and saw no reason to change that (Exported to Ancestry periodically). I've complained about it often enough, including on here, but I stick with it because I find the tree very easy to navigate. Anyway, at under £10 a year, who's complaining?

The person who has your family on might have researched your branch, as Chempat says, and put them on, easy enough unless your very immediate family are from Austria. Ask around your known cousins. They shouldn't have the living shown except as "Living Person", but (like Ancestry) you can search for and find a living person in another tree even though they're not shown. 

I do find that a lot of people don't reply. I think it's because it's free to join and start a tree - a lot of people start on FH and then give up, so no response. I've stopped messaging people for that reason, though I do get the occasional message (even fewer  than from Ancestry).

The lady on there has Many generations of my Austrian side that you'd actually need o research to get the addresses of the houses.

Same goes for my Mum's side AND my wife's side.

I've never used Genes Reunited (in fact I haven't heard anyone mention it for years), so I don't know if this is feasible, but have you ever shared your tree with anyone? If you have, they could have shared it with others, who then passed it on and so on, and someone has put the whole tree on Genes Reunited.

Odd that the tree has both you and your wife's side on - unless this person is related to both of you she looks like one of the dreaded Name Collectors (a term Guy says we shouldn't use). Has she tens of thousands of relatives on her tree?

Researching Scots and Irish ancestors would be no problem if you have access to the sites (for instance Scotlandspeople).

Years ago I found myself on someone’s Genes Reunited tree but strangely not my parents ?
I emailed them several times to see what the link was but never had a response.

I presume you can't see her tree. You could research this lady (if you know her name) and see how and if she relates to you. I could help since I know my way around GR, but you'd have to send me both her name and yours via PM. Have you even started to create or import a tree there yet?

Crikey, I'd forgotten that I was on Genes Reunited. Haven't visited the site for donkeys years.

Just had a quick look and 23 other people have me on their tree. About 5 of them are known to me the rest are total strangers.

Chris_49, some of the people whose tree I'm on have 3 - 5000 people on theirs so almost certainly name collectors.
