So far as I can see, it looks like these are the two possible families:

John GREW (weaver)  m Elizabeth (BRYAN? in 1769)
1770  John
1773  William
1774  Mary Burthell
1776  James
1778  Elizabeth
1780  Peter
1782  Martha
1784  George
1790  Joseph

and George GREW (weaver)  m Sarah (HARRISON? 1766)
1767  George (possible death 1768)
1771  Sarah
1773  William
1776  George
1778  Susannah
1780  Mary
1782  William
1786  Lydia

I may have missed a few, from memory all bap Bethnal Green

There is also a death for a George GREW aged 52 at Westminster in 1837 (so born c1785) - just to complicate things more.

There is also a burial for a George GREW 22 July 1810 at the Countess of Huntington's Connexion, Spa Fields (the non conformist church where Caroline Rhodes GREW was baptised). No age given, is this a red herring? or a possible connection to the George and Sarah family?

Not sure that this helps.  :-\

Modified to strike through - I think that this George was 6 months old.

Thank you so much for this, it has made it very clear which couple had which children. Are there any steps you can suggest to ascertain which family is my family? Or are we at a dead end unless I guess, which I don’t want to do?

If you are interested in researching the origins of George GREW  marr. Elizabeth MOWATT, St Mary Stoke Newington 2 Mar 1809, you need to know more about the family they have.

If you see the name Caroline Rhodes GREW, which they give to a daughter, to suggest a related family,  then you might similarly hope that accounting for all their children.....siblings of your ancestor James George GREW.....might produce further clues.

I think these are children of George GREW and Elizabeth MOWATT.......

Father  Charles BANNISTER   dead

Witnesses  Richard JONES(?)     Sarah / Maria / Annie (?)  HARRIS

                                        ------------------------------------

For each family....use Ancestry Census records, Ancestry London BDM, GRO births... to locate their children. Account for children at each Census. If any are missing, look for them....they might be with GREW/MOWATT relatives....that is the purpose of finding them.

Note the witnesses at marriages....are they relatives.  Note addresses for marriages and baptisms. Use Ancestry London Electors....search with address, and year +/- 5 years to see what names appear.

All the Census records.....1841....1851.....1861....1871...1881....1891....1901........all of them.

Note the addresses where they are living, and who is living at the same address.  Residences are identified   by //...........//  Where you see //......./........// they are separate households at the one address. Look to see if people at same address might be related.

Look for GRO birth, and baptism for children to see if there are second given names.

You need to follow Sarah....some clues to find there.

And where is Caroline Rhodes GREW?

Why does Mary Ann not sign the register when her siblings do sign?

Search 1841....1851....Census for GREW....MOWAT etc....born stoke Newington.

"....Ann 1811, Martha 1813, James George 1818, Sarah, Caroline 1821 & Emma."
.....who is Ann.......where do you see Ann?.

George GREW  marr. Elizabeth MOWATT, St Mary Stoke Newington 2 Mar 1809

I think there are three....four?.... witnesses....can anyone see these names?

It might be that you will not be able to identify the baptism for George GREW, married 1809, died 1879, but you will have filled out the family tree for this generation.

Do you see a death for Elizabeth GREW nee MOWATT?

Very difficult to read.

I asked about the faded names on a different thread and the PP there thought:

W(illia)m [Bow???] [place or rank or another name?]
[forename contracted Pannall or similar] Charles [Bo??d?]
[name] [another name]

And another kind pp restored the names a bit:
