Perhaps Andrew believed or was led to believe that John Berry was his father, or thought of him as a father, having had him as a stepfather since age 7 and possibly in Andrew's life prior to then.

I think the info. re John Berry & Andrew Craig have been inserted on the MC the wrong way round i.e. should have read;

Andrew Craig (Reputed Father)
Margaret Butler, subsequently married John Berry

Annie
South Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland:- Bowie, Campbell, Cumming, Currie

Ireland:- Cullen, Flannigan (Derry), Donahoe/Donaghue (variants) (Cork), McCrate (Tipperary), Mellon, Tol(l)and (Donegal & Tyrone)

Newcastle-on-Tyne/Durham (Northumberland):- Harrison, Jude, Kemp, Lunn, Mellon, Robson, Stirling

Kettering, Northampton:- MacKinnon

Canada:- Callaghan, Cumming, MacPhee

It reads under the heading for parents names, etc.

John Berry
General labourer (Reputed Father)
Margaret Butler
subsequently married to
Andrew Craig
Farm servant

Meaning that Margaret Butler had the child before she married Andrew Craig. John Berry was the reputed father ,as suey said''

‘Reputed’ father , meaning believed to be.

Add - the header was cropped off the clip. Here it is in full

Andrew's birth certificate declares him as illegitimate, father Andrew Craig.

If the info. on the marriage was an error with the names switched & Andrew Craig had signed his name as being the father on the BC there should have been no need for the word 'Reputed' on Andrew's marriage cert.

What do you think, Annie?  We've both seen many Scots certs.  Why would he  say that his reputed father was John Berry?
Andrew Craig is only mentioned here as his mother's subsequent husband.

I'd like to see the birth registration to be sure.

I agree, it makes no sense otherwise.

Margaret Butler married John Berry 1891, Inchinnan

no mention of Andrew Craig. So it looks as if Andrew jnr got it the wrong way around when he gave the info.
