No details given of timescale?  Have you tried the records office?  Quite often if a particular building is demolished they take photos

Ancestor had blacksmiths in 1851 Census. Checked Durham Archives online catalogue - nothing. Checked newspapers for when buildings and PH demolished - nothing.

After making contact with the Lanchester local history society I have been told that the Greyhound Inn (and attached blacksmiths shop) was demolished in 1965. I have also been pointed to a book (from 1993) that has an image of Bargate.

I have also viewed the appropriate OS maps which have given me a good idea of the 'lie of the land'.

Many thanks to all to have replied to my OP

After internet search of second hand book sellers, I have failed to find the book.

The book in question is 'Lanchester in old picture postcards' by Eric Burns -- any one know of second hand booksellers in County Durham / Newcastle / Northumberland (Barter Books does not have a copy) that I could try?

I have an old ex-library copy of this book which I would be happy to give you.  You can see the old pub and blacksmith's shop in the dstance but not in any great detail (page 64).  How can I get it to you?  I have a great interest in this pub/smithy - do you know anything about it?
