Ancestry - idiot's guide to finding specific church records pls?
« on: Thursday 31 December 20 21:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can someone pls give me a button by button guide on how to use Ancestry to find the baptism records for St Thomas's church Bethnal Green Middlesex for around 1780-1800? I would like to flick through the virtual books page by page if possible and I cannot work out how to do it.

Alternatively, another example would be the church at Stoke Newington for the same period of time? (I know Ancestry has these records as a pp told me, but I cannot work out how to find these for myself and it would be really good to know how it's done).

Thank you.

Edit: I'd also like to look at St Matthew's Bethnal Green

EDIT: Sorry, I've detailed the wrong year range. Give me a couple of minutes and I'll update this.

1. Open the collection: London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1917
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/1558/

2. In the Browse this collection section (on the right of the page)...

3. Select "Tower Hamlets" in the Borough drop list

4. Select "St Thomas, Bethnal Green" in the Parish drop list
NB: The Parish drop list gets populated after you select a Borough

5. Click the year range, (under the Parish) to browse the register
NB: The year ranges get populated after you select the Parish

The collection should be:

London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/1624/

However, I can't see St Thomas listed under Tower Hamlets.

EDIT: sugarbakers beat me to it.
EDIT: Added info from British History website.

FamilySearch indicates St Thomas wasn't built until 1844. Did you have a reference to a baptism at St Thomas in that period?

Districts were assigned to the remaining six churches in 1844, (fn. 102) although the last, St. Thomas's, was not consecrated until 1850.

Sorry, poor presumption on my part. It may (cough) be St Matthew's in the same place. Apologies.

I'm sorry to be very dense, but how do I even access the collections in the first place? Is it via the search button at the top and then drop down menu to BMD inc parishes? Then how on earth do you know how to narrow it down or find the right church pls?

EDIT: Just realised your question was probably directed at bearkat so ignore this.

There may be other ways of doing it but the following works for Ancestry:

1. Open the Card Catalogue:
Top menu >  Search > Card Catalogue

2. Enter "London Baptisms" in the Title input and click Search

The results should include the relevant collections.

Personally, I add collections to My Quick Links (on the home page) that I often use. You just need to provide the URL and a name. It makes it much quicker to access collections.
