Medal Card help required for Bernard McSheaffrey.

I have the medal card for the above person. He was in the Scottish Rifles. He was awarded the Victory Medal. It has D/103 B19 and page 2321 beside it. Underneath it has do. do. So he was awarded the British Medal too. His Rank was Pte. He has two Regtl. Numbers. Wondering if he served in two different campaigns. The first Regtl Number is 36823 and the second one is 63212. Hoping you can help change the info into a readable form for me.

One of my grandfathers was also in one regiment, but had two service numbers as in his case there was re-numbering in 1917.

Is this the Bernard McSheaffrey who was jailed for 30 days in Glasgow in 1924 for an ingenious theft of a gallon of whisky from a bonded warehouse?

The two numbers just means he was renumbered, the other numbers beside the Victory Medal and British War Medal are simply the Reference number if the Medal Roll, unfortunately they don’t provide any further information.

His medal roll entry states he was in the 5/6 S. Rifles.
This refers to the 5th. & 6th. Btns merging in May 1916 hence the 2 numbers.
36823 was his 5 or 6/S.Rifles number & 63212 his 5/6/S.Rifles number.

Bernard McSheaffrey was born Glasgow 1898 and died 1943 Glasgow. He married Margaret Mills. He was the son of William McShaffrey and Mary Hamill. I think this could be the one who was awarded the medals.
There was also a Bernard McSheffrey who was born 1833 Donegal. He married Caroline Shields and he died 1894 Baldernock, Stirlingshire. Bernard and Caroline had a son also called Bernard. Who was born 1869 Baldernock. Seem to be a few variations of the surname.

This is quite a tricky one to sort out.
You don't know when he joined.
You don't have a service record.
You do know he didn't go overseas pre 1916 as he doesn't have the 15 Star.
The diary for the 5/6th. S.R. doesn't start until Oct. 1918.
Reading the diaries of the 5th. & 6th. S.R. it appears that the 6th. left it's Bde. (100th.)
& joined the Bde. of the 5th. S.R. (19th.).
From there on in they lose their title & are just referred as the 5th. S.R.
As your man has 2 numbers it could be assumed he was formally with the 6th. S.R.
& was re-numbered on transfer to the 5th.
So the starting point is Jan. 1st. 1916 & up to 29th. May 1916 in the 6th. S.R. diary
& from then on the 5th. S.R. diary.

You'll notice that the 6th. S.R. diary continues to Jan. 1917 but there seems to be  some
confusion at 3rd. Echelon level as to why.

Just to flesh out AV's info both the 6th.S.R. (100 Bde.) & the 5th. S.R. (19th. Bde.)
were in the same Division (33rd.).
