Yes it is a posed family photo but in my opinion, the girls are wearing fancy hats for a reason.

I was wondering about the hats too, Carol. I think the girl at the back has a label on hers - or on the veil or whatever that is attached. I wonder if there was some kind of village fete and they had entered a fancy hat competition  :-\

I guess I though the chubby girl, Kay, was wearing something traditional at the time so hadn't thought about the possibility the two headdresses were linked in another way. Still find it strange but guess I will have to go with that idea.
