Whereabouts of McIntyre's Court in Manchester 1860's
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 13:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows of the exact whereabouts of a place called McIntyres Court in the Ancoats district of Manchester, which featured on the 1861 Census.

I have been researching the life of an ancestor who had the unenviable job of a 'Night Soil' man who emptied the earth privies. He died in New Bridge Workhouse of Consumption in 1868 aged just 44 and his last known address was  McIntyre's Court. I know it was quite near Poland St, off Oldham Rd but would absolutely love to know the exact location. I would also be grateful for any information concerning the state of these Courtyard dwellings, which I should imagine were associated with great poverty
Thank You

Here's a link to an Ordnance survey map from 1845 - 1848 that is of the area of interest.  I haven't spotted the McIntyre's Court on it yet but maybe someone else might know where it was:

Just to confirm - on the '61 Census the address immediately before your "rellie" is George Leigh St and immediately after is possibly Malkington Court ?? (1 entry) and then Loom St?

This shows the general vicinity in side by side view:

McIntyre Court doesn't seem to be marked. Oftentimes courts are not.

If you search for Manchester courts housing 1800s or similar terms and select images there are a few related to Manchester which might give you an idea of what it might have been like. I found a couple of mentions of Ancoats.

George Leigh Street ran parallel with Oldham Road

Great Ancoats St ,Canal St and Butler St and Oldham Road were the boundaries of that area.
My mother was born in Back Pump St , near by in1896.
In mews  cottages.
Look for Henry St, Luna St,Gun St and Cotton St.
Jepson’s  Court and Blossom Court are two of the many there would be .

Viktoria.

This is the 1851 Town Plan Manchester. Unfortunately, the zoom (+) function is restricted.

Note - you can see some of these Courts/places on the '81 map
