David McMillan married to Nicholas Rae
« on: Monday 04 January 21 05:08 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can clarify this. Nicholas Rae is my second cousin, three times removed.

Under Statutary registers Marriages 871/15, David McMillan married Nicholas Rae on 3 Nov 1863 in Kirkcudbright. His father, Henry McMillan, and mother, Catherine (nee Gilmour), were deceased. David's age was given as 40 and Nicholas was 39.

Two years later, on 30 November 1865 (ref: Stat registers Deaths 871/95), David McMillan died. The register says he was married to Nicholas Rae and her details check out. (She was born in Auchencairn on 28 May 1823.) But David is now 55 years old, his father is Henry but his mother is now Jane McMillan (No maiden name given.) Both are deceased.

Can anyone help?
Thanks, Michael.

The marriage record is more likely to be correct, as David provided those details himself.

Several death certificates of my forebears are incorrect - usually the father is correct, but the mother is often wrong, as often the spouse or child of the deceased doesn't have a clue what his mother's maiden name was.

Were any of the witnesses relatives of David?

The marriage record is more likely to be correct, as David provided those details himself.

Quite often the children of the deceased are the informants or others unknown to the grandparents & the chances of them knowing the g/mothers' maiden name is slim if deceased prior to their own births although not in this case re children.

Henry isn't a popular name i.e. have you found the family on the 1861/1851/1841 census' prior to David's marriage, best going back

What were the the names & addresses of all people on the marriage which include witnesses & what was the occ. of David & Henry on both the marriage & the death of David?

What was the RD (Registration District) of the marriage & death of David?

The RD was Kirkcudbright in both certs. David's witness was the minister (George Wood) who also certified the cross mark which was David's signature.
Henry was listed as a Farmer (but deceased) in the marriage cert and as a Carter (but deceased) in the death cert.

Hi Michael

Did David show as widower when he married Nicholas Rae?

There is a family tree which shows him (with parents Henry McMillan and Catherine Gilmour) as having
married a Mary Jane Breen in 1858 in Strathblane, Stirlingshire www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY7V-D9V

Her dates are given as 1834 -1862, with her death on 1 March 1862 in Milngavie New Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire.

Easy enough for you to check on SP. Thought if correct would give you a chance to check again his parents' names.

What was his occupation at that time?

There is a Mary Jane McMillan and son Henry lodging with a Girvan family in 1861:

Mary Jane McMillan 29 Printwork hand
Henry McMillan 1 b. Strathblane www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQT4-G43
Address: Netherton, Strathblane

David McMillan not showing on this listing for the household.
