Red Cow Village Topsham
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 11:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I am looking into the Back family in Topsham and in 1851 they were living in Red Cow Village. It is in the census for Topsham although it appears to be on the edge near Newport road but the only reference I can find is a Red Cow Village near the train station in Exeter.
Can anyone shine any light on this for me please because i am really confused. Another member of the family was born there in 1865 so they obviously stayed there for a while.
Thanks
Alison

Not sure if there's anything of use here?

There's a Red Cow Village in Exeter?

There's a "Red Cow" railway arch on Denver Road, Topsham, right beside the Topsham Rugby Club. Headroom 14ft 👍

Thank you K Garrad, Griff-2 and Carol

The railway arch is near Newport Road so that fits and the Genuki has given me lots of new information.
The Red Cow Village next to the station seems much to far away to be in Topsham but surely there can't have been two!

There's at least 3 stations in Exeter, I'm guessing the one you found is St Thomas? Which is pretty close to Topsham.
The area around that one is Exebridges, (I'm just off there now for a spot of food shopping)
I'd stick with the one at Topsham

Is this it?

Added:
If you look at the enumerator's route on page 1 of the 1851 census, it might give you more idea of location.

Newport Lodge, Seabrook House, Newport Farm etc appear just before Red Cow in the 1851 census ....
