Farmer of Skelmanthorpe
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 12:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help at all please. I am trying to see if I can find any further information on one of my relatives, Patrick Kelly - all I have for him so far is some information from his sons wedding certificate. The certificate is as follows;

Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church of High Hoyland, in the County of York, 23rd April 1844
Groom: Joseph Kelly
Age: 20 years, bachelor
Profession: Surveyor
Address: Skelmanthorpe
Grooms father: Patrick Kelly
Profession: Farmer
Bride: Harriet Scanlon
Age: 20 years, spinster
Profession: Blank
Address: Skelmanthorpe
Bride’s father: Charles Scanlon
Profession: Farmer
Witnessed by: John Early, William Allot

I have no census information for Patrick or Joseph in 1841 and in 1851 Joseph is with his own family. Sadly I do not know the name of the farm for either father. The 1851 Census for Joseph is as follows;

1851 Census, 30th March
Address:   Paulden Street, Waterhead, Oldham
Name: Esther Kelley            Born: Saddleworth, Yorks   Age: 5
Relation to House Owner: Daughter   Born about: 1846
Name: Harriet Kelley            Born: Saddlewoth, Yorks   Age: 26
Relation to House Owner: Wife      Born about: 1825
Name: James Kelley            Born: Oldham, Lancs      Age: 1
Relation to House Owner: Son      Born about: 1850
Name: John Kelley            Born: Oldham, Lancs      Age: 3
Relation to House Owner: Son      Born about: 1848
Name: Joseph Kelley            Born: Ireland         Age: 26
Relation to House Owner: Head      Born about: 1825
Occupation: Painter

Many thanks, Luke

So Joseph was born approx 1825 somewhere in Ireland - father was Patrick

Joseph was a surveyor on his 1844 marriage cert but a painter in 1851

His father Patrick was a farmer

Do you have any info as to whereabouts in Ireland he was from?

Yes that is all correct CaroleW.

The only document I have for Joseph that mentions him being Irish are the 1851 Census and the 1881 Census which I've just found ... both give no more information than to say Ireland. Here is the 1881 Census...
