Can we date this boy's clothes please? Chillenden, Kent
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 22:35 GMT (UK) »
The photographer was operating in Sandwich between 1868 and 1896. There is only really the cap to go on, but it is quite distinctive. Sorry the picture is small, it is a piece of a larger picture.

No date but perhaps a little larger:

We need to see all of the photo really as there is not much information to accurately date it. Is it a postcard.

Much better and I'm guessing that the back is blank, Square corners of a Carte de Visite, 1860s.

This is the back. The photographers dates are at the beginning of the post. I copied it from a local history website, assuming it was a postcard, but it does look more like a carte de visite. The church was restored in 1871, so I wondered if that was connected.

I agree with Carol. The back points to early 1860s.

There is a road drain cover in the bottom right hand corner of the photo, and one in the same place today.  Would there have been road drains in 1860 in such a small village?  The road wall and the left hand gate post are still identical, though the ?yew trees have grown up somewhat.  Also, the photo is in very good condition for one taken 150 years ago.
I'm wondering if the lad was a telegram boy, circa 1890 to 1900; the cap's about right.

Suggests that the basic design is more or less the same since the 1870.
