1921 Census
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 22:36 GMT (UK) »
I understand that the 1921 census will be released online in January 2022 so we have to wait for another year to access that information. Does anyone know if it includes Northern Ireland or due to the conflict did NI get dropped until the 1931 census? I know that there was a census in 1926 in Ireland that was briefly rumoured to be released early, however that will probably not be released until 2027. Did that census include any information on Northern Ireland?

Happy New Year and thank you in advance for any information

Pat

The Northern Ireland Census was taken in conjunction with the 1926 Southern Ireland Census, therefore currently would be inline for release for Public View in January 1927.

But as You are aware, there is pressure for an earlier release of the Southern Ireland Census, whether that would also include the North, as well, is really a wait and see scenario.

There was a census in NI in 1927 but it's missing. No-one knows what happened to it. Some speculation it was lost in the war due to German bombing but no-one really knows. What is certain is that PRONI don’t have it, and so there's nothing to release in 1927. No census in NI in 1931. There was a census in NI in 1937 and that is reportedly safe (but won’t be released till 2037).

Too bad about the 1921 census - was looking forward to an opportunity to dig in.

Thanks for the info everyone - very weird that the NI 1927 census is missing but hopefully the 1926 census has some info although waiting that long seems like forever.
