What did he steal?

Hi - having trouble working out what the last word is in the line that begins "Stealing a quantity of...]
I can't think of any word that would fit the apparent letters. Any help much appreciated.

Some context might help - what is the document you are looking at? Can you post a link to it?

It's a very large page from the Admissions Register of Saltley Reformatory, in 1885. I can't post a link because it is a photo I took myself, some years ago, hence the indifferent resolution of the snippet I posted. He lived, and committed his crime, in Wednesbury, in the Black Country near to Birmingham. Not noted for its textiles, but it is possible he stole from a shop. Unhelpfully, I could not find a report in the British Newspaper Archive.

If it is 'worsted' it's rather mangled!

I attach the original photo of the full page, if that will help with context.

I agree with Mike in Cumbria that it is Worsted.
The top part of both the s and the e are very faint, and the d at the end is barely visible. But the W is very clear - compare Wednesbury elsewhere on the page.

In the boxes describing previous crimes,  stealing worsted is the last. It is clearer and matches.

I was concerned about sexism in the pages of the school entrance - all referred to HE criminals. No She Criminals. However there were both.
