What relationship is your 3 closest DNA matches on your paternal side & have you made contact with others to find out where those links are?

Alastair, I think Annie’s idea to look more closely at your DNA matches might be a good positive step forward.

I think you mentioned that your mother has taken a DNA test? Do you have her results yet? If or when you do get them, have a good close look at all of your higher matches which do not also match with your mother. Let us know what they reveal, and please ask for help if you need it. You could very well be looking at some quite close relatives on your father’s side.

I have ordered a new DNA test from My Heritage so I can compare the one from Ancestry.  Mum hasn't got her results yet.  My sister had one done, and interestingly hers is quite different to mine.

I will keep you appraised.

I thought you might like to read this as your mother might recall where your father had been which may at some time help trace him?

Alastair. No don’t order a new kit!

You can upload the raw data from your Ancestry DNA to My Heriatge and FTDNA. This costs nothing.

However you will need to pay a one off fee to access some of the useful features on both of those websites. Sorry I can’t recall the cost to do that.

It may be  that ordering a completely new kit is not much more expensive than paying that fee, but you can probably find out via some google searching.

Added: due to the random way DNA is passed down siblings can often get different results.
