Can I find the address/next of kin of WW1 medal holder
« on: Friday 08 January 21 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help solve a problem.

About 70 years ago my late Mother bought a pair of what I believe are called V&C medals for a man who served in the Royal Engineers in 1914.

I’d love to know more about this man - where he came from, his next of kin (he survived) or anything which might identify where he came from.

Am I really asking the impossible?

Thanks

Presumably you have his name and number from the medal? Have you looked for any record on line?  As a starter National Archives would have his medal card. This won't have addresses but will give a start for a search.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Hi

Thanks for the fast reply.

I identified the man on www.forces-war-records.co.uk, but as the medals were bought in Ireland, wonder whether he came from here.

Might the National Archives show/have any more information?

Kind regards

If you give his name and number we can take a look and see what (if any) records may have survived for him.

ShaunJ - Thanks a million.

It would be wonderful to know something more about him, in the hope of finding his family on the 1911 census.

He was Thomas Mulligan, Service No. 163352, a Pioneer in the Royal Engineers.

Thanks again

His army papers have not survived (most WW1 records were destroyed by enemy action in WW2). His medal roll record shows him as 607281 Pioneer T Mulligan, having previously served in the RE as 163352, and in the Labour Corps as 348386.

There is a January 1919 medical record on FindMyPast which shows him as then aged 51. https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBM/MH106/P2/014246

There are pension index card records on Fold 3 (I don't have a sub), which apparently show that he resided in Dublin and his widow was Elizabeth. This is under Thomas Mulligan 607281

Hi again

Oh, that is super, I imagined a much younger man.  Thank you so much.

I don’t have a sub to Find my Past either, but will go searching....

Kind regards
