Alfred R Evans - Death 1961 at Memorial Hospital, Peterborough

Hi,

I have had my Great Grandad's death certificate arrive today, Alfred Richard Evans.

He died on the 12th June 1961 of a brain injury as result of a van knocking him over.

I have heard stories that he was a drunk, and he burnt all records and photos so i'm trying to piece together a bit of history about him.  I can see that he was living at Westwood Hostel in Peterborough at the time he died, but i can't find any references of Westwood Hostel in Peterborough online from searching Google and i don't really know where else to go.

Would anyone have any suggestions of where to look, I was wondering if there might be records of when he moved in to the Hostel and perhaps even a photo upon him registering etc (i know that's a long shot).

Yes, he was a bricklayer at the time of death.

Have you seen the article in The Peterborough Standard about his death and inquest.? You can see it in the British Newspaper Archive or on FindMyPast.

There are also many mentions of the Hostel in the newspaper archive.

There is no mention of him being drunk when the accident happened

Quite a few of the articles that mention Westwood Hostel are about occupants who were drunk

Hi, i have since found the same website as somebody else told me to look.

There is an article on him stealing a pair of boots and getting put in prison.  He said his excuse for stealing the boots was 'that he'd been on the beer' so he was definitely a bit of a bad character.
