Peter Carter 1848

Peter Carter was born in Oakington 31st March 1847.
In Q3 1868 he married Mary Ann Thulborn (Thulbourn) and they had five children.
Frederick 1870, Minnie Ann 1872, Caroline Azubah 1876, Grace Maud 1880 and Christopher 1883.
The mmn (mothers maiden name) for all five children was Hawkes. FindMyPast & GRO
In 1871/1881 the family are living in Oakington. Mary Ann's birth recorded as 1849/1850.
Mary Ann Carter died Q4 1887. age 39
My assumption was that Mary Ann was married previously but I can't find a marriage.

Can anyone help or explain?

Only 3 male Thulborn deaths in the County before 1868, they were 1863 & 1865 but Mary Ann would be too young to marry before that time. No birth record for Mary Ann Hawkes.

The other option of course was that her mother was "Hawkes" and you found it ... well done.

It's odd that neither Thomas 1843 or Mariam 1849 are listed in births.
I can't find Richard Thurlborn marriage to Mariam's mother, Mary.
I found Richard 1841 in Oakington ... no wife, four children. Can't see him in 1851.

Re the 1861 census. It says Mariann Thurlbourn (or Thurlboun?) age 12 on the original. Above her is Thomas Hawks.
