Mangerton Ruin Query
« on: Monday 11 January 21 10:29 GMT (UK) »
A stone shield built into the ruins of the tower/castle at Mangerton, Rox has been examined by numerous experts. It is dated 1583. I have all the details from the RCAHMS etc. I have a poor quality photo of the shield which I've attached. I would like to see other photos of the shield, particularly any pre-1980, in order to identify the symbols more accurately.
I have seen a variety of descriptions of the symbols, some seem likely, others don't. Erosion has obviously taken its toll! I would prefer to make my own judgement as to what is shown.
Could anyone with photos please post them?
Many thanks in advance,
Bob

I'd go for the imprint not a photo of something that would certainly be in worse condition due to 20thC pollution but that's just my opinion.

Sadly there's very little of it left now, Don. There have been numerous Armstrong Clan gatherings over the years, certainly since 1980, so potentially a lot of photographs. However, there must surely be some taken in earlier times?
Fingers crossed!

It has certainly weathered! Not sure what you have seen or not seen, Bob, such as this? http://reivers.info/mangerton-tower-heraldic-panel/

There is also this:

Two other  rubbings  are  of  coats  of  arms  from  the  towers  of  Mangertonand  "YVhithaugh.No.  4.  The  Mangerton  one is  dated  1583  over  the shield.    The  blazonhere,  for Armstrong,  is  a  chevron between  three  lozenges in  the  centre  ofthe  dexter  side  of the  shield,  and  a  sword,  point  upwards,  on  the  sinisterside.    On either  side  of the  shield  are  the  initials  S.  A.  and  F.  F

This snip is from PROCEEDINGS SOCIETY  OF  ANTIQUARIES   OF  SCOTLAND.'NINETIETH  SESSION,  1869-70. Link shrunk www.rootschat.com/links/01q7f/  It is the third link on the page - journals.socantscot.org › index.php Hope it works! One of those messy cached links.

Firstly, many thanks for your reply, Monica. It was very kind of you.
I have seen the info you listed. I have seen a number of varying descriptions of the stones and their symbols, so keen to see as old a photo as possible as they can't all be correct!
Cheers,
Bob
