1939 evacuess leaving England Sept 1939
« on: Monday 11 January 21 10:50 GMT (UK) »
I am reading a book called
“Domestic Soldiers” six women’s lives in second world war
It mentions 1939, the Govt created a scheme whereby they sent children oversees as evacuees,  thousands of  British  children    were sent by boat to various countries,  on 20th September one boat  was torpedoed, 90 evacuees , 77 children perished, I assume this boat had left from England
The 1939 registration was taken on 29th September, it makes me wonder how many children were not on the 1939 and now seem to be missing unknown
I wonder if these poor children are listed somewhere
Hope I have my facts right ?

It looks like those evacuations overseas didn't start until the scheme was approved in June 1940.

It states the ship was on it's way to Canada and torpedoed on 20th Sept 1939, I was really thinking of missing children

Thank you for your replies

The book is wrong.  The incident took place on 17 September 1940. The City of Benares was torpedoed and 77 evacuee children were killed. 13 survived.

The book does say earlier in that paragraph that the scheme to send children overseas was created after the fall of France, which was in June 1940.

No - these events did not take place in September 1939.

As ShaunJ says, it was 1940, not 1939. So the children should be in the 1939 Register, though their names may be redacted.

You might find this TNA blog-post informative ...

The children's names are included in the outward passenger lists on Ancestry and FindMyPast.
