Surname Keffell
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 10:35 GMT (UK) »
I have Grace Keffell marrying William Purnell on 5th May 1776 at St James Bristol. The marriage is on Ancestry,i have traced William right back, but cant find a thing on Grace.I am wondering if the name could be Kessell, although it looks like Keffell, and has been transcribed as that.Grace died aged 35 in 1786 and William about 5 years later, leaving one daughter. Its Graces parents that i need.If anyone can help, thank you.

Its transcribed as Keffell but Grace didnt sign so may have been misheard.

The name could be Kessell/Keevel/Cavil and other variations.

Eg a Sarah CAVIL, Widow, married Bristol 11 Jan 1755

I agree with William the name is common in Cornwall.

Old English f and s  (especially ss was written ff)

e.g. I have Russell in my tree which could be spelt Rufsell or Ruffsell.

There are various website on the net which explains this.

The marriage was by Licence - which should give more information .... age etc.

There is an Index of Bristol Wills 1572-1792 on Ancestry and does list

John KESTELE - dated: 1788

So this must be the John KESTLE - who buried 30 January 1788 at St James, (in my later message)

Ancestry: UK Poll Books and Electoral Register, Bristol 1774

John KEFTLE

Ann Purnell was my 3rd gt/gm.Both parents died young, but i have found 2 siblings of William who might have taken her in.Iwill research the other names you sent because Ann had a daughter called Fanny and one called Grace, she called one of her girls Fanny,so there could be another discovery coming up!Thankyou Glenys.
