Help requested to identify surname in 1624 Cheshire Will.
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 16:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Please could somebody help me identify the surname on the attached picture ? The initial letter has me stumped - it does not appear anywhere else in the Will nor in my 'Secretary Hand ABC Book' that I use for reference. If it is not a surname, what word is it ?
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Simon, please make another clip with less zoom (about half what it is now) and covering a greater area so we have the context.

I think it might be 'G' - I've come across a slightly similar one as in the clip below, though mine has a more upright style.

In fact you have one a bit like that too, near the start of the 3rd line up.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I also think it's a G of the form seen in George.

Hi, both,
Well, I feel a bit foolish after that !
Thank you, both, for your help.
If possible, could you give me your thoughts on what John's surname is ?

Looking at the words expences and discharged, I think it is:  Grices

Does the possessive fit in context?

I have found Grice, Gryce and Grace locally but a search for any John by those surnames does not reveal a spouse with the surname Janion or any variant thereof. There is also no Probate that might match but the record of such a marriage might simply be missing.
Any other thoughts/comments welcome. If not, I fear I might have to draw a line on this person just for now.
Thank you once again.
