Have googled , but can not  make sense of it .

D  =  500
C  =  100 ( so CC  is 2 x 100)
L  =     50
X =      10 (So XXX is 3 x 10)
V  =       5
I   =        1

1000 + 500 + 200 + 50 + 30 + 5 + 1  and that adds to 1786
