Of possible interest:

"SECOND COURT
(Before Mr. PAYNE.)
Samuel Giles, 33, was indicted for stealing the sum of
11s. 6d., the moneys of William Sampson, and for fraudu-
lently obtaining 20 brushes from George Henry Sharplin.
The prisoner delivered goods to Mr. Sampson, in the
Kingsland-road, which came to 8s. 6d. Mr. Sampson gave
him a sovereign, and he went to get change, but did not
return, and the charge was that of stealing the difference
between the sovereign and price of the goods.
It was suggested that it could not be a felony, as the
prosecuter gave the prisoner the sovereign to change, but
The jury found the prisoner Guilty and he was sentenced
to six months' hard labour.
