Initals on 1930's Steamer Trunk
« on: Thursday 14 January 21 12:11 GMT (UK) »
Hiya,

I'm in need of some help again.

My Mam has a 1930's steamer trunk that she got from her grandfather when he died in the 80's. She knows nothing about it and no family members seem to know anything about it either.

The trunk is exactly the same as the one attached but has the letters S.M.L.B printed on the top. We are not sure if the letters are a company stamp or the initials of someone? We are surmising that the 'B' stands for 'Burns' as this is the family name?

Basically, we just need a little bit of information about the trunk. If anyone has any information we would really appreciate it as it would give us a starting point for our research.

Thank you in advance :)

I had a one of the same design but brown rather than green.
It survived 3 transatlantic crossings starting in 1910.
There were no initials on the trunk.

The initials will be that of the owner.

I used to have a brown one, it belonged to my father who traveled with it to Canada and back in 1910. Itís last sea voyage was when my husband and I moved to Malta in 1962. We got rid of it about 12 years ago.

From the 1920s they were also often used by servants to keep their belongings in, since they were lighter than the old wooden kists.

Yes, my mother had one when she went into Service at the age of 16 about 1931 it was green, for years it lived in the rafters of the garage, we got rid of it in 2002 when she died. From Scotland to NZ, then back and forth, until us children arrived.  It also had her initials on it, as she also joined the Land Army then the Wrens.
