How can I retrieve files from crashed laptop

My granddaughter needs help. Her laptop crashed and because of this she cannot retrieve her university files She desperately needs her files to continue her work. What can she do ?? are files still on hard drive. Any help appreciated.

Most Universities have some type of University Networked Storage and usually suggest students save files to it and/or Google drive or other cloud storage option. Has she been doing that?

IT Service Desk and the Student Equipment Support Services or equivalent  at Universities will usually be able to assist students attempting to recover work not stored in either of the above methods.

In her 'panic', she may not have remembered if she saves to one of these methods, so worth checking with her first.

Viktoria has your granddaughter actually contacted the uni and explained her predicament. They may grant an extension.

When you say crashed, do you mean the hard drive died, or the laptop just will not turn on?

Many of us will have had this happen at some time or another but it does remind how essential it is to maintain some sort of a backup off the machine, either on a removable drive/memory stick or on the "Cloud".  Even if it is a few days out of date it is easier to rebuild than when everything is lost. I'd hate to have to try to rebuild twenty odd years of Family research. 
I hope your granddaughter can recover her files without too much loss.

I’m sure your granddaughter has already explained to the uni what has happened and requested an extension.

Of course retrieving the files could take some time, however once they are retrieved she will have proof of date and time her work was last saved, and her university may accept her work if she can supply this proof.

Unfortunately “computer dying” and “files corrupting” will be a common excuse used to try to get out of handing in work in time.

I feel your pain - I’ve been through this many times with my daughters. When stressed and rushing to submit work within the time frame, things always seem to go wrong - hardware issues, software issues, not always just user error and not saving work.

Added: If she is not technically minded she might be better off taking it to a professional to retrieve the files. I don’t think they ever guarantee success though. Good luck to her.
