In 1939 they were at 35 Gwyn street, Bedford and they had been at that address since 1929 as per Bedford Electoral Rolls available on Ancestry.

From same source, in 1918 Henry James Hayes was at 102 Greyfriars Walk on the Absent Voters List where his service details were T4/159815 Dvr. 3 Co. 55 Div. Train ASC

On 1919 Absent Voters List he was at 50 Hassett Street, Bedford, his service details were T4/159815 Dvr. 3 Co. M.T., R.A.S.C.

With regards to him being a publican... 50 Hassett Street, was the 'Twist & Cheese' & as per Beds Times of Apr 1928 the license for that pub transferred from Henry Hayes to Arthur George Cox... and later in 1938 Directory at 35 Gwyn Street was the 'Prince of Wales' and as per Beds Times of May 1940 the licence transferred from Henry James Hayes to Herbert James Stock.

Really appreciate you taking the time johnP to look up and post details that you have found. That is very useful info. I presume the Absent Voters List was made up primarily of people eligible to vote but in this case away serving the country in WW1. If anyone can find attestation or details of where he may have served I would be really grateful to hear.

Rootchat bunch are an amazing group, thankyou.

Further to Henry James Hayes, he had a son Walter James Hayes birth Registered Bedford Sep Qtr 1921, Mother's Mmn Kingsnorth. I am told he had a daughter Christine. Apart from his birth reg I cannot find a marriage for him or the birth/birth reg of his daughter. It is understood he served in WW2. Anyone help?

Walter James Hayes lived alone from 2003 until 2013 in Bedford.   GRO death index shows he died in Dec.qtr.2018.

Doesn't appear to have left a will but copy of death certificate could detail family if they were the informant.

From Bedford Electoral Registers available on Ancestry.
Alice Kate (or Katie) Hayes died 9 Sept 1942 at 42 Oakley Hill Road, Oakley which was in 1937 thru to 1948 the home of Rhoda Kingsnorth (possibly a relation). In 1949 Rhoda is at 116 Milton Road, Clapham with Henry J Hayes (don't know where he was prior to this). They are both at that address until 1954, then Rhoda Kingsnorth dies in Sept 1955 age 94. Henry remains there until 1960, but in 1958 he is joined by Walter J Hayes & Joan Hayes. From 1962 to 1971 Walter & Joan Hayes are at 31 Mount Pleasant Road, Clapham.

So checking FreeBMD I found a marriage for Walter J Hayes & Joan Watson in Cambridge RD in Sept 1942. & then found a birth of Christine Hayes (where mother is Watson) in June 1946 again in Cambridge RD. A Christine Hayes married Jame W Tallentire in Bedford RD in Dec 1966

I will let you investigate further as we are getting into a timeframe of living persons

Having continued to research the Hayes family I have managed to get back to the grandfather of Henry James namely Henry Hayes b c1832.

Although my research started in Bedfordshire, I quickly found that historically, several generations lived in the Dartford and Wrotham Registration Districts of Kent. The Grandfather of Henry James was Henry Hayes b c1832 Wrotham who married Mary Collins Sep Qtr 1853. Mary b c1836 I have them in 1861, 1871 living Dunks Green, Wrotham, 1881 ShipBorne. 1891,1901 Swanscombe.

I have found that wife Mary died aged 72 at 71, High Street Greenhithe 22 Oct 1904. I cannot find Henry in 1911 Census neither can I find a logical death date for him. If anyone can help me with either Henry in 1911 or a possible death date, location etc I would be very much obliged. I wasn't sure whether I should have put this on the Kent site!
