1841 Census: Buttesland Street, St Leonard Shoreditch
Martha, with parents Charles and Martha
Ref HO107; Piece 707; Book 7; Folio 36; Page 21

1851 Census: Clift Street, Saint Leonards Shoreditch
Martha Meale? with father Charles and siblings
Also at same address, in different household is a Louisa Marchant, cousin of head Elizabeth Cleghorn.
Ref HO107; Piece 1536; Folio 410; Page 33

Is Louisa Marchant the same Louisa Mary Marchant Cleghorn that married Thomas Harris Pollard (jun)? Her age does differ though, so maybe just another relation.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to my question you have all been so helpful and I am amazed at how you think out of the box.  I do not think I would have made the connection and Martha Merle was quite a girl.  I am looking forward to the certificates arriving.

I have finally received the birth certificates for Martha Merle's sons with a different name for the father from the Baptism records, she seemed to like changing the fathers name about I guess because he was married to someone else.  But I am certain they are one in the same.

Again thank you all for your help

Thanks for posting details, so a different address to the baptism records - did she just miss off surname Pollard  ???

That makes you wonder what father's name would be on the b/c for Martha nee Merle's daughter Martha Harris Pollard

In 1881 the two boys were born in Clerkenwell and Islington.  There are no births registered under POLLARD.

I just need a little more help I am afraid.  I still cannot find where Martha Merle b.1840 (and her children Thomas Edward Pollard and Henry Alfred Pollard) is in the 1871 census.  I have tried surnames Pollard, Harris, Merle but nothing.  Any help with finding this elusive lady and her sons would be greatly appreciated.

Mmm…..if I remember correctly the family were very elusive in 1871

Reply 8 from Suzy100 as a possible for Martha in 1861

1861 Martha Merle, lodger Millner  living  4 Downham Road Edward Place Parish  Hackney

1881 Martha Pollard, Millner & sons Thomas & Henry living 86 Hertford Rd Hackney

I’m guessing they should be somewhere in Hackney in 1871 as her three children

Thomas Edward Harris (bpt Pollard) born 7th April 1864
Henry Alfred Harris (bpt Pollard) born 16th April 1869
Martha Harris Pollard born 8th Jan 1871

were all baptised at St James Hackney (1871/72) and the address on their baptism record
65 Long Alley

 ???
