A tree on Ancestry shows parents as John Simpson & Mary Hume.  He died in Tasmania 1914

No maiden name for Mary and no HUME for Thomas

added - looking at other entries, I am wondering if Mary's name was RINGLAND (I had assumed first she was a god-parent)

Many thanks for this information.
The Mother Mary HUME, hard to find her Ancestors.
According to family myth she was related to Hamilton Hume a prominent Explorer in Australia in the 19th Century.

On FindMyPast in British Armed Forces And Overseas Banns And Marriages is a 1796 marriage in Calcutta of a Mary HUME to someone TWIDALE.  It’s a transcript only.

But I can’t see a later marriage for Mary Twidale to John Simpson.

Has

John Simpson married Martha Matilda Lawyer or Sawyer a widow 21 May 1823 (they say Sawyer)  at Portsmouth.  He is a gunner.

That jersey baptism says John was a Bombadier  Royal Artillery.
