Ancestry - Why do I need Premium membership?
« on: Saturday 16 January 21 15:46 GMT (UK) »
I have found several of our (mine and Himself's) rellies amongst the WWI records on Ancestry.  Today, I found another under "WWI Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923".  Why would they say that for this particular record card I need Premium Membership?

I've just checked and Ancestry are offering 3 memberships- Essentials, Premium and Worldwide.

This is what Essentials includes:

Census &  BMD information Crown Copyright www.nationalarchives.gov.uk and GROS - www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

As far as I can see these records are held by Fold3, which is why you need a Premium membership.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

But it seems crazy to have all the Enlistment, Medals, etc. on the Essential membership (which is what I have) which gives such a lot of info but not this.  Is it JUST the Pensions? And if all records are from National Archives, why would they split off this section?  Whatever, it is very frustrating. ??? ???

The WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards were saved from destruction by the Western Front Association, they aren't National Archive documents. In order to save them in digital form, the WFA entered into a commercial arrangement with Ancestry, all explained here:

Okay, thanks, that explains it all.  I don't think I'll take out the Premium membership unless I have to!

I recently had a Worldwide membership, but whenever I tried to look at things like Newspaper obituaries it said I needed to pay extra.

I just googled my answer, I would need All Access to also get Fold3 and Newspapers.com, and I read that unless you are in the USA these are not a lot of use, as they are very US centric. I think maybe three or four times during a one month Worldwide membership I tried to look at a newspaper article and got the message that my subscription didn't cover that.

I have worldwide & newspapers.com are a separate entity although they provide a link for you.

Likewise, they provide links to various other things for deaths etc. which can be free or payable.

As with military records, some are free, others are payable with link provided.

Fold3 records are not included in Premium Membership, as I have just found out when I tried to view a WWI Pension Ledgers & Index card.  I have "chatted" with John on Ancestry and he has confirmed that you need a separate sub to view these records.  Disappointing!  Might save up my wants and have a 7 day free trial.

Ancestry say Premium includes comprehensive military records but this is the definition of that word:

"including or dealing with all or nearly all elements or aspects of something"

so nearly all is what you get!
