My husband's great grandfather Thomas Peter Wilkes owned a Printing Company called Wilkes & Co. back in the 1860s and many years after. Most of the men from the family worked in this company at some point in their lives. The company was based in Newington Butts and later in Walworth Road. Can anyone tell me where I could find company records of staff employment in this Company. Any help would be appreciated. Lorna

Would very much doubt you would find employment records from such a long time ago

I agree with Carole, you're not likely to find employment records.

But sometimes other things will pop up if you search everywhere - including Newspapers.

My grandmother worked in a Cigar Factory in the late years of the 19th Century in the East End of London, and imagine my surprise to find out which one it was via a Newspaper Cutting mentioning her name as a winner in one of the races at their Annual Outing to Epping Forest!

I was able to find out the name of the firm, and follow their history in Whitechapel also.
