Hello,

Could anyone help in identifying two early sporting ladies from Ontario? Mrs J.R. Burgess, a very distant relative, was active circa 1900 nand seems to have come from the south of the province (Norfolk county?).
Peter

You must know where is your link coming from to get to Mrs J R Burgess ? This might be the most accurate way of discovering which Burgess family.  It might also save us a lot of time looking for a needle in a haystack.

and in reply 10 - wonder why Newmark401 thought Annie was a US player ?

Interestingly we used to have a prolific poster asking about tennis players going back a few years -
Newmark401 - on the tennis forum he used, it is suggested Annie Burgess was from the US ???

July 6-10, Canadian Championships, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada (Grass)

SF: Annie Burgess (US) d. Miss Hanson 6-2 6-2
FL: Violet Summerhayes d. Annie Burgess (US) 1-6 6-4 6-2

Hi, Sandra, I think the source was an old Canadian lawn tennis annual we once had in the family. It's funny, but for some reason the initials J.R. stuck in my mind. In any case, it looks like Annie C. Burgess might well have been the player in question.

Could Annie have gone mad after her road accident, which prevented her from playing the sports she loved, and been confined to an "insane asylum" as a result? It's one possibility, I suppose.

Thanks, again, for all of your help.

Peter

Just to finish off my token contribution.

In 1913 (Dau's) they have left the luxury of Rosedale (Nanton Ave), and were living at the newly finished Kingsley Mansions on King St. West at the corner of Jameson.  Quite the change from where they were living.

https://losttoronto2.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/king-and-jamesonkingsley-mansions

From the city directories of 1915 they are still there but not there in 1916 onwards or anywhere else in Toronto.

I checked the limited resources I have and see no death of John 1915-16.  Ontario Archives are still using film for this period so no probates/wills to peek at.  So I'm grabbing my scarf, toque, mitts and heading home.

My interest has really been ignited by the helpful replies I recently received from *Sandra*, RunKitty and DonM, so I'll post what I know about a few more early Canadian tennis players here and see if anyone can help in positively identifying them or with additional information.

A Miss A.W. Lawson won the women's singles title at the Nova Scotia Championships in 1905 and 1912. Apparently she was from Halifax, but I couldn't find her in ancestry and don't have access to Canadian newspaper archives.

A Mrs C.V. Christie was runner-up in the women's singles event at the Province of Quebec Championships in 1919. She is very obscure and probably didn't take part in many tournaments thereafter.

A Mrs A.R. Porter was runner-up in the women's singles event at the Province of Quebec Championships in Montreal 1933. She is another player well hidden by her married and, probably, the initials of her husband's first names.

According to the website tennisarchives.com, the early Canadian player Ralph A. Burns was born in Toronto in 1892. However, he was already winning tournaments in 1895, so that year of birth can't be right. But he was probably from Ontario.

Thanks In advance for any help.

Peter
