Testaments in the Glasgow Commissariot not on scotlandspeople.
« on: Monday 18 January 21 09:20 GMT (UK) »
I was browsing and came across a book published by the Scottish Record Society  “The Commissariot record of Glasgow 1547 - 1800”. It lists testaments etc.
National Recods of Scotland say these are available on scotlandspeople.
However, there are some in the book for which there is no date, and these don’t seem to show up on SP.
Attached is a clip from the book showing ‘John Cochrane parochinar of Strathavene. II 46.’
Also attached a clip from the introductory pages of the meaning of II.
Well, a part explanation. There’s nothing to say where these 'folios' fit in with all the volumes of testaments.  I can’t work out when this volume II would have been to even get a very rough date for it. (I'm presuming it's volume 2 and not 11, but I don't know).
Does anybody have any ideas about this, or is my only recourse to contact NRS.
I expect they are closed at the moment. Does that mean they are not replying to emails?
(Sorry, on the other side of the world here, so not up with everything that’s happening in the UK offices).

They are under 'Legal records' with the heading 'Wills and testaments' which are at the bottom of the page below census records on left side.

After you click on 'Wills and testaments' there's a drop down list 'Court/Commissariot' which houses 'Glasgow Commissary Court'.

Hope this helps?

I assumed that goldie had looked there from what was said.

I thought I'd given the source in my reply but it seems I didn't.  I shall add it  :)

It looks as though it's only the ones with dates which have been indexed.

It could be that the text didn't show the dates.  The rest of the entry matches.  Maybe the SP people did a more thorough examination of the testament.

Here's a snip of the first paragraph. I can't make much out as theirs an imprint of previous/next page showing but someone might be able to work it out.

Gadget,

I'd assume there was no dates showing as I came across a similar list a while ago with dates missing & the ones with dates were on SP.

Those old docs. are something else, I call them 'splash painting' works as I can't read them unless the odd word here & there  ;D

I've pmed Bookbox to see if she can read the paragraph. It might give clues. Often there can be two parts.
