Help with information
« on: Tuesday 19 January 21 08:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, this is my first post on here although have been doing my tree for a little while, I have a grandfather who was born 1873 in Durham and enlisted in northd fusiliers in 1892 with a regimental number of 3442. This is where I am at a loss as unsure where to find more information about him and his life in the fusiliers. Grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction or have any information. Thankyou

Hi and welcome to Rootschat. Is it John Hunter that you are researching?

If it is John Hunter, he only served for a couple of months and then bought his discharge for £10.

Welcome from me too.

The page ShaunJ linked to is on Findmypast [as you can see from link address] but will only be viewable if you have a subscription or pay per view rcedits. It would be worth it as that military record gives a description and his father's name & address which you may not have. You may be able to get a free trial.

Thanks for this Shaun/josey  I will have to subscribe to FindMyPast as only part of ancestry and already used my free trial so may use pay as you go on FindMyPast, but that is interesting, a bit of information I have found shows that he went to uk royal hospital, this is in Chelsea pensioner soldier service records.

I think the inclusion in Ancestry's so called "Chelsea Pensioner" records is a mistake (or a misnomer) , based on the assumption that the only army records to have survived from that era are for those soldiers that were discharged to pension. This man did not go on to pension - he bought himself out of the army after just 2 months.
