Civil death registration ??
« on: Tuesday 19 January 21 17:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to find a civil death registration for Mary Ann Dowding, wife of William Dowding, both of Gillingham Dorset.
Mary Ann was buried on September 3rd 1873 at Gillingham and the burial record records her abode as Longmoor, which is correct.  She was 47 or 48 at he time of her death.
Is it likely that her death was never registered or that the records are lost, I would if possible to obtain a death certificate.
Look forward to any help TIA

It’s possible she was left off the list when the Index was compiled, it has been known to happen. You could try Shaftesbury Register Office which is where the death would have been registered.

Sadly, it happens.
My granddad's birth wasn't registered (1901 Sunderland).
I asked the register office if they would do a search for me and they did, 5 years either side of his birth, nothing.
And I found out a little later that one of his brothers was a few months late being registered,  his parents gave him a new birth date to avoid being in trouble.

Could there have been an inquest thus delaying the certificate but with permission to bury her or did she die out of that area so had to be registered there.

I have checked the full GRO index for the September qtr 1873 and also for 1875 as 3's & 5's can sometimes be misleading but no entry found

Also tried wildcard search in case of mistranscription but no joy

It's very frustrating, there's a lot of info to be had from certificates.
