Mid Victorian R.N. frigate.

   This picture was embroidered by my great-grandfather, and we have always assumed it was one of his ships. I have also wondered more recently whether it is a generic sailing ship, possibly pre-printed on the canvas. The rigging, to my untutored eye, is very similar to that of the Juno, his first ship, of which there is one picture on-line, but the gun ports(?) are very different.

Good evening,

 Too many guns to be HMS Juno, she was probably the 3rd ship with that name. She was a 26gun 5th rate ship, frigates were all 5th or 6th rate. The ship pictured will be a 4th rate two decker with at least twice as many guns and would be a ship of the line.

I think their is a little artistic licence as the guns shown are too close together.

 The 4th ship with that name was built in 1895 so probably too late to be this one.

PS, the picture shows 39 guns which would give a total of 78. Only found on a 3 deck 2nd or 3rd rate ship of the line.

I wonder if she could be HMS Ganges

   I am wondering now if it could be the Cumberland, launched 1842, 70 guns? It was pottering around Sheerness all the time he was with her, so there may have been time to spare.
   Alternatively, just a sailing ship!

  Thanks John. It is a precious heirloom, a bit the worse for wear, though not much faded.
