Hagley Row / Road
« on: Thursday 21 January 21 04:12 GMT (UK) »
Just checking to see if, by any chance, Hagely ROAD (as in 1841 Census or 1851 Census) was previously Hagley ROW (as found in Wrightson's Triennial for 1815-1818)?
I see plenty of Forum interest in Hagley Road, but the man I was looking at - William Withers, butcher and his brother Samuel, taylor - were both in Hagley ROW.

Did it's name change somewhere?

Cheers

Interesting article in Birmingham Daily Post 02 November 1965

It is titled - The Midlands then and now - Five Ways

Part of the article state " At various times we find that Hagley Road also called Hagley Row and Halesowen Road, and Harbourne Road was also called Long Lane."

Kay

Added - Five Ways in a major roundabout junction on the south side of Birmingham

In 1851 William is living at Longmore Street.

Are either of these men living at Hagley Row in any census?

Thank you for your responses.
Kay99 - as I suspected, the original Row became a Road.
Ruskie - no, not included in 1851, but 1841 still a butcher, shifted to Upper Tower st, Birmingham.

It's the 1815-1818 Wrightson's Triennial that has William in "Hagley Row" but no occupation.

Kay99 - woah!! "Marriage- Lately, at Worcester, Mr. William Withers, to Mrs. Elisabeth Withers, both of Hagley-row" in 1824? I hope not the butcher!!  In 1822 he and his wife Hannah Clayton had a son, Henry. My man married Hannah in 1817 at St Martins. Hannah was born in 1796, but I don't have her date or place of death.

Many thanks

William Withers and Hannah Clayton also had a daughter in 1829, named Elizabeth and another named Ellen in 1833.

This looks like the William Withers in the Newspaper article born 1802 so too young to be yours https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGDK-98NB
