Sapper 1861 John Jerred - lookup request

Hi good people
John Jerred is/was my ggggrandfather.
I am led to believe that in about 1861 he was a Sapper (Royal Engineer) - he was from Devon.
I am wondering if anyone has any access to online records that would show some light on to any information pertaining to this man.

Do you have any idea of when he was born and where in Devon?

Girl guide - unfortunately, ashenique and I can only guess that he was born in about 1838. No idea of where in Devon. Thanks for asking though.

What was the name of his wife and where did they marry?

I can see 2 John Jerred/Jerrad's bapt in Devon in 1839.

However, I have also found an account of a Cornoner's Inquest in The Salisbury Times on 13 July 1878, giving an account of the death of a John Jerred aged 37--a former soldier, but he is reported to have had no wife or children.
