I have John Henry Mexter 1867-1918 married Ellen Mary Mansfield 1866-1918
I also have James Mexter 1860-1889 also married Ellen Mary Mansfield 1866-1918
Can you sort this out for me please, did she marry both? From what I can make out documents on ancestry show Ellen Mary Mansfield tied in with both. I know I get confused quick, is it me that can’t see the wood for the trees. Both Mexter’s have the same parents James Mexter 1832 & Charlotte maiden name Cogswell 1836-1921

I'd say Ellen Mary married her deceased husband's brother

From what I can see that wasn't clearly legal until 1921, which may explain her using her maiden name at the second marriage
