Thomas Macdonald (McDonough)1892
« on: Thursday 21 January 21 17:15 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I'm trying to locate my great grandfather prior to arriving in tht USA.

He naturalized in summit county Ohio in 1924 and on that document he said he arrived in New York on july 15th 1923 on the Baltic.  He listed himself as being a machine operator and last residence was liverpool.
Born 25 may 1892

I've searched the manifest and couldn't find him unfortunately but maybe there's something I've missed.

He did serve in ww1 but my family no longer has any documents or medals anymore,  just an old photograph with him wearing the liverpool Scottish uniform.

He may also have been a McDonough at some point but I can't know for sure.
On a travel document from Canada to the us he listed his cousin as Annie P Tatro (born McDonough) from Birkenhead, Cheshire.

This has been a frustration of mine for years now so if anyone has any ideas or tips or anything I would be incredibly grateful.

Thanks!
Warm regards,

Trevor

Hi, have you any ideas about his death, ie place and date +approx age. That might give us a starting point. Who did he marry.

John

He died in Hamilton Ontario in 1967, I've ordered the death certificate but it'll be a few months before i get it.
I don't even know that the death certificate will tell me anything about his life before 1923.

He married Jean Mcfall in summit county Ohio in 1924. Not much info there either.

I'm really hoping the arrival to the states in 1923 will give me insight into where he was and what he was doing before.

I was also told growing up that he met his wife on the boat over to the us but i can't find much info on Jean mcfall either.  She was apparently born 1904 in Glasgow.

I've created an ancestry family tree with what I've gathered of anyone is interested.

There is a tree, presumably yours with quite a bit of information re Annie P McDonagh, born 1889 to parents Daniel McD and Mary Gerrard.
The tree has Annie’s Ohio marriages including one to Guy Edward Tatro.
Her obituary shows her birth as 17th March 1889, Birkenhead.

Have you followed Daniel McDonagh for any brothers who might be Thomas’ father?

Yes I searched each of the siblings but came up with nothing concrete.

I don't think that's him.
He was catholic but that document has him listed as a hunchback, which he certainly wasn't.

Since its so difficult to start looking for a specific Thomas Macdonald in census records when i know nothing about his life really before 1923, other than he was in ww1, i was hoping that focusing on finding the immigration information about him could help me search back further for him.

So, if Annie is a cousin of Thomas, his father should be one of Daniel’s brothers, John, Roger, Patrick.

Thanks everyone for all of your input, it's all very much appreciated.

I have looked into all of Daniel's brothers and sisters as well as all of Mary Gerrards siblings and have found nothing very helpful or concrete.

I really want to be able to find the immigration information for Thomas Macdonald or Jean Mcfall who apparently met on the ship over.

Thomas, on a naturalization form, said he arrived on the Baltic ship in new York from liverpool on July 15th 1923.
I've checked the passenger list arriving in ny and leaving liverpool and couldn't find him but i must be missing something.

I believe the ship stopped in queenstown but I'm not sure exactly which queenstown.

I really don't know where to go from here and I'm not keen on giving up so if anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.
