If  he  had done 5 plus  years before  his attestation  date he wouldn't be on 1911, would he ?

I would recommend checking the marriage cert. for Albert Day to Joanna Spencer in 1918 to check for father’s names.
I would still recommend this as the best course of action to Celticwarrior.

When applying for the certificate, do I use the information from the marriage index?

If you double check freebmd's if you think this is the right couple

Alfred Day
to
Joanne Spencer

1918

That will give you the information you need, give registration area and ref  numbers, usually straightforward but I guess a bit nerve racking the first time, it is a long time since I ordered a marriage cert online so I am not sure what other info they ask, don't press the order now till you are sure, it might be a costly mistake

Good Luck

Yes, you are right Osprey, I hadn't doubled checked that far back

Seems they had
Patricia E
Patrick
Eileen N who possibly married Joseph Hunt

They seem to live as a family at one time in Greenwich

Yes, you just fill in the form on the GRO site. It’s straightforward.  Don’t order it via a third party because then much more expensive,  the £11 at GRO is bad enough!
