annie mirriam Belcher - bapt. 1859ish West Hanney
« on: Friday 22 January 21 00:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have a problem - I'm looking for a birth/baptism for the above in about 1859 in West Hanney, Berks.
I have found this lady marrying a Frederick De Jersey in Brisbane, Australia in 1881 and lists her father as Daniel Belcher, clerk & Lizzie Greenaway and born West Hanney. Daniel & Elizabeth married 1846 W.Hanney.
I have the parents and several other children all in West Hanney but no Annie Mirriam only a Mary Ann born 1857.
Would anyone have the Hanney records they could do a look up for me, please?

I'm wondering if Mary Ann became Annie Mirriam.

A look for a  birth registration in the GRO index does not reveal any entry only Mary Ann 1857 in the Wantage dist.

The other anomily is that she says her father Daniel was a clerk whereas all the censusus say Agr.Labourer.

Can anyone help with this query please.

Certainly there is no Annie with the family in 1861.  :-\

Where do you have her age? Is her age on her marrriage and death certificates consistent with a birth around 1859?

Have you tried to trace the other BELCHER girls - Amelia, Sarah, Mary Ann, Emily ...?

Not sure about the discrepancy in occupation, on the other side of the world maybe it was tempting to embellish?

For interest, though it doesn't help find Annie:

"WANTAGE
Petty Sessions, Wednesday ...
A complaint made against Mrs. Wicks, of West Hanney, for killing a cat belonging to Daniel Belcher, of the same place, was dismissed. Mrs. Wicks had lost several ducks, and the cat being caught in the act of destroying one, was hung. The bench considered Mrs. Wicks was justified in destroying the cat for the protection of her property."

Also, an advertisement for the propertry where Daniel resided at West Hanney (also "Mr. Greenaway") for sale in 1877.

Hi maddys52,

I don't have her in any censuses, as yet.

So far,  all I have is her marriage entry which states she is;
aged 22, a dress maker & d/o Daniel Belcher (clerk) and Lizzie Greenaway

Using the GRO search indexes I have found 11 birth registrations - 6 of which are girls.
Of these six, I have found 5 of them getting married but not a marriage for Mary Ann whose birth is registered 1857.

Because of this, I was wondering if she changed her name to Annie Mirriam.

My only other thought was, that perhaps there are more than two Daniel Belchers married to a Lizzie Greenaway - so far nothing has shown.

I know the Oxford FHS has released a new CD which covers, amongst other parishes, Hanney upto 1982 etc but all the other parishes included I have records of.

Alan

PS. just seen your additional posting - many thanks

It does sound possible.

I see a public tree on ancestry has a birth for Annie Mirriam at Wantage in 1860, but the reference leads to the one with mmn HURST, so not very reliable I would guess.

Hopefully someone will come along with access to the parish records.
