Fitzgerald's of Cork
« on: Friday 22 January 21 21:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any information on the Fitzgerald family in Cork - specifically looking for information centrering on Denis Patrick Fitzgerald (1871 - 1948) who was professor of anatomy at University College Cork (i.e. parents, children / descendants).

Married: Sarah Collins

Known children:

John Kevin Fitzgerald (1912 - 1976)
Eileen Fitzgerald (1911 - ?)
Muriel Fitzgerald (1910 - ?)
Grace Fitzgerald (1915 - 2001 - my grandmother)

According to an obituary in a medical journal, he had 8 children and was survived by his wife

Seems to have been quite a distinguished guy so hopefully someone will have a known connection!

Hi,

Thanks for that - I have a record of that and the census in 1911.

Hopefully someone on here has a connection no matter how remote.

It's quite difficult to find anything else on them though as registration of births don't seem to record the parent's names (hence other than the children above, I can't find any other children, even though there's definitely 8 of them).

I actually managed to find Denis Patrick Fitzgeralds death certificate - can anyone read what the note says next to his name? He's at the bottom / occupation listed as retired professor

He died 2nd January 1948
Mercy Hospital (which is still in existence) seemed to be the place where all those listed died.

The house name is very difficult to make out, it could be quite a few words, such as Dione.  Would he have named the house after his wife or foes that word have a meaning?

Well Road, Douglas, Cork (County) is where he lived but the house name must have been changed.  I'm wondering if the name of the house was "Dune"

I hope somebody will come along who can unravel it.

The Irish name Fitzgerald (spelled Mac Gearailt in Ireland), is of Anglo-Norman origin meaning 'the son of Gerald'. The Fitzgeralds of Ireland are said to be descended from Maurice, son of Gerald (husband of Nesta, Princess of Wales), constable of Pembroke and of a royal heritage in Wales.
